Redeemer is planning a mission trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama the week of March 31 to April 7 to help rebuild areas affected by the F-5 tornado that struck in April 2011. Trinity Presbyterian Church, a local PCA church serving as a disaster relief site, will host our team by providing meals and housing in their facility. We will be working with two organizations: Habitat for Humanity and Forward Tuscaloosa. The cost of the trip is $250 per person. This covers room and board in Tuscaloosa and the cost of gas. The church is underwriting a required $100 donation per person to Habitat for Humanity and making a generous donation to Forward Tuscaloosa.
Food, housing and evening activities will be the same for all regardless of worksite. To reduce costs we will not be renting vans for this trip, so we need a few volunteers to drive their personal vehicles. As stated previously, the church will cover the gas costs.
Habitat for Humanity is coordinating construction to help rebuild houses destroyed by the tornado. Skilled volunteers are helpful but anyone 16 and older can participate regardless of skill level. Details on the work, the accommodations, what to bring, and other requirements can be found on the MNA Volunteer Fact Sheet.
Forward Tuscaloosa & the Tuscaloosa Area Volunteer Reception Center (TARVC) have a variety of volunteer opportunities, ranging from debris clearing to housing rehabilitation projects and sorting warehouse goods. Anyone 12 and older can work on their sites. Volunteers working in debris will be required to wear closed toe shoes and long pants. There is also work needed in warehouses with sorting goods that have been donated for the storm. There are a few housing rehabilitation projects but they are limited. Our work with Forward Tuscaloosa will depend on a combination of their needs when we arrive, how many people we bring and any preferences we have that they can accommodate. We are requiring that all middle school volunteers be accompanied on the trip by one parent. For more info please visit the TARVC website.
