Real Life Marriage Conference Feb 10 & 11

Please join us for a Real Life Marriage Conference which will be held at the church Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. Dr. John Cox, Clinical Psychologist, conference speaker and columnist, will talk about Real Life Marriage and encourage and challenge couples in all stages of their relationships. John specializes in working with couples on their marriages and parenting.

If your marriage or dating relationship is difficult sometimes – Welcome to the party! You are normal! Because if you are married or dating another human, you are going to have problems.

But how do we solve these real life problems?

Our world is filled with either easy pat answers or easy divorces to solve the problems that all romantic relationships create. Let’s work this weekend to look at Real Life romantic relationships, Real Life problems, Real Life people. Whether you are married or just hoping to be, we will look at Real Life Solutions.

Schedule:

Friday Evening, February 10

7:00pm — Registration Begins

7:30pm — Session 1: Making Sense of Communicating (If You’re Gonna be Married, You Might as Well Get to Know Them)

– Everyone talks about building Intimacy in a marriage, but what is it? In our first session, we will look at different levels and styles with which couples communicate. We will try to define what real intimacy is, how our different styles interact, and how you can better understand your mate's communication (as well as be better understood!)

8:30pm — Dessert & Coffee

Saturday, February 11

8:30am — Breakfast & Fellowship

9:00am — Session 2: Resolving Conflict (Because if You Both Always Think the Same, One of You is Unnecessary)

– When couples fight, they typically are operating out the “fight or flight” part of their brains. We will look at how to slow down and stop those “same ole patterns” (you know, the ones you have been doing since you first met) and actually work to identify and solve the problem together rather than just trying to win.

10:15am — Session 3: Marriage and Your Needs (The Real Cause for Marriage Problems)

- What kinds of emotional needs can we expect to have met from our marriages? Most of the problems that couples have in romantic relationships relate to their not getting something they “need”. But what kinds of needs were romantic relationships designed to meet? In this session, we will discuss the role your significant other, but also the role of the church, other friends and God in the process of addressing our needs.

11:30am — Session 4: Understanding Roles (It’s Not about Who Gets Their Way)

How does God want a couple to work together to be "one flesh" while having different roles? What does it look like to lead in a way that reflects the character of Christ? How do we keep submission from turning into servitude? These concepts are often oversimplified in ways that are unhelpful to both men and women. In this session, we will work to make sense of what the Bible says about differing roles in marriage.
